ABOUT US

History

As early as 1877 a side playing under the title of The Gentlemen of Essex played a match against the Royal Artillery, Shoeburyness. These matches continued up until the club was formally constituted on the 5th November 1907. Mr Charles E. Green became the first president of the club on Tuesday 5th November 1907 and there was a close relationship with the County for a number of the intervening years.

If you would like more information on the history of the club a book titled “A Potted History of the Gentlemen of Essex Cricket Club 1907-2007"  is available.

Traditional Cricket

As cricket has changed throughout the 100 years or so the Gents of Essex has remained steadfast by still playing “Traditional Cricket” played in the spirit of the game. We still play in whites, usually an 11.30am start, bat till you declare or all out, finish 7.00 - 7.30pm. Lunch has been known to last slightly longer than the usual 40 minutes!

Membership of the Club is by invitation of the committee only and is restricted to those born or permanently resident in the County of Essex.

Opposition

Matches are played against local cricket playing schools, local cricket clubs and similar traditional clubs like the Gents of Essex. If you are a club and interested in playing us please contact our Fixture Secretary (details at the Contact Us page).
